12/8/2023 0 Comments Kaleidoscope k9sNyx is learning the "leave it" command, and hevhas gotten better with it when it comes to small animals on walks like rabbits or squirrels. He does not like to be alone, he is fine as long as his foster brother is with him. Nyx would also be good with other dogs though it may take a bit to warm up to them. I would say a home with other dogs, preferably female, and older kids or at least kids that understand dogs needing boundaries would be good fit for him. He also does well with people, and seems to like children he is a little shy around kids but if they approach him he will give them kisses. Nyx does very well with his foster brother Thor but gets on edge around strange male dogs. He might be better with female dogs, however the only ones we have had the opportunity to meet have all been male. He has gotten better on walks when meeting dogs but is still a little tense. Nyx is not good with cats at all! I also would not place him in a home with smaller toy breed dogs. Nyx can be very opportunistic when there is something tasty within reach. He has improved tremendously, but I would still not trust him alone, and unsupervised in the kitchen. Nyx does very well as long as stuff is not left right at the edge of the counter. We are still working on counter surfing, and basic manners. He does sleep in a crate if he becomes anxious, he will destroy the flimsy wire crates. H0e is beginning to allow himself to relax and feel secure in his new surroundings. He has come a long way since his rescue intake, and he is ready to find his forever home. ![]() In 1935, the breed received AKC recognition and began a new phase as an imposing show dog and loyal pet.Nyx is a 4 years old Siberian Husky. During World War II, the Malamute was once again called into service, this time to serve as freight haulers, pack animals, and search-and-rescue dogs. As the breed’s reputation grew, some were chosen to help Admiral Byrd in his 1933 trek to the South Pole. In the 1920s, a New England dog racing enthusiast obtained some good specimens, and began to breed the traditional Malamutes. The pure Malamute was in danger of being lost. The native breeds were interbred with each other and those brought by settlers, often in an attempt to create a faster racer or simply supply the vast numbers of dogs needed to supply the gold rush. With the discovery of gold in 1896, a flood of outsiders came to Alaska for entertainment, they staged weight-pulling contests and races among their dogs. When the first outside explorers came to the region in the 1700s, they were impressed not only by the hardy dog but also by their owners’ obvious attachment to them. ![]() They were an essential cog in these people’s lives and were treated almost as one of the family, although they were never pampered as pets. These dogs were, of necessity, large and strong rather than fast, enabling one dog to do the work of many smaller dogs. The dogs served as hunting partners for big game, and hauled the heavy loads back home. ![]() ![]() The word Mahlemut comes from Mahle, an Inuit tribe name, and mut, meaning village. The breed’s origin is unknown, but was first described living among the native Inuit people known as the Mahlemuts, who lived along Norton Sound on Alaska’s northwest coast. Like most of the dogs of the spitz family, the Alaskan Malamute evolved in the Arctic regions, shaped by the adverse climatic conditions.
